Enjoy summer on your terms – no guilt, no hangovers, no regrets
Long summer days can bring more opportunities to relax, connect and let loose – but they can also come with extra pressure. Pressure to drink, to say yes to everything, or to fall back into old habits. While enjoying yourself is important, so is protecting your wellbeing.
This No Regrets guide is about making the most of summer while staying grounded, connected and in control.
You Don’t Need a Drink to Enjoy the Sunshine
It’s easy to associate warm weather with alcohol – but sunshine alone can lift your mood. Try soaking it up in ways that support your wellbeing:
– Go for a walk or bike ride
– Plan a picnic with your favourite non-alcoholic drinks
– Try a refreshing mocktail recipe at home
– Look out for free community events or outdoor classes
Taking time in nature or fresh air can do as much for your mental health as it does for your body.
Say Yes to People – Not to Pressure
Summer can bring a wave of social invites – barbecues, festivals, birthdays. You’re allowed to say yes and still protect your boundaries. And you’re allowed to say no.
– Bring your own alcohol-free drinks to social events
– Have an “exit plan” if things start to feel overwhelming
– Spend time with people who respect your choices
– You don’t have to explain your reasons – doing what’s best for you is enough
You’re not missing out by putting yourself first – you’re setting yourself up for a better experience.
Keep a Clear Head
Longer days and looser routines can make it easy to lose track of your usual habits. Staying grounded is about being aware of what you need in the moment.
Try checking in with yourself:
– Am I doing this because I want to, or because I feel expected to?
– How did I feel last time I stayed alcohol-free or substance-free?
– Can I pause and remind myself, “I’m choosing this”?
You don’t need to be perfect – you just need to be present.
Recovery Doesn’t Take the Summer Off
If you’re in recovery, summer might bring extra challenges. Triggers, unexpected cravings, or changes to routine don’t mean you’ve gone backwards – they mean you’re human.
You don’t have to face it alone.
At Forward Leeds, we’re here throughout the year. Whether you need:
– A safe space to talk
– Peer support or SMART meetings
– Help finding a local sober social group
– A reminder that you’re doing OK
You can always reach out. Take what you need – no judgement, just support.
